Benefits of Oil Bath for Hair

Do you know taking Oil Bath (or Hot Oil treatment) is beneficial for hair? My parents used to tell me that I should apply little oil on my head at least twice in a week and leave it for five to ten minutes before taking a head bath. According to them, boys/men should do this on Wednesdays and Saturdays but girls/ladies on Tuesdays and Fridays. Of course they were attaching some religious or cultural values to it but I did not bother them asking why on these days.

Now, things have changed and children need an explanation to everything we parents tell them. They are right and we should be in a position to explain to them to clear their doubts. They live more based on science and not religious values.

Benefits of applying oil on head/hair

  • Hot oil treatment is good for protecting and nourishing dry, brittle hair – but make sure which oil suits you better. Plant/Vegetable oils are advised.
  • Moisturizes your hair
  • Increases hair strength
  • Reduces dryness of both scalp and hair
  • Provide better Dandruff control
  • Reduces Frizz – Frizz is hair that does not align with the surrounding hairs, but stands up or curls independently, creating a fuzzy or irregular texture
  • Reduces split ends
  • Promotes healthier hair by increasing blood flow in the scalp

But is it safe always?. Plant/Vegetable oils may not be safe for everyone. For people having sensitive skin, these oils may show adverse reaction to oil. Hence care should be taken in selecting the oil. You can get advise from a Dermatologist. Oil containing Synthetic Ingredients must be completely avoided and stick to 100% natural oils. Test the oil with a mild dose and watch for any reactions. If it does not produce any skin irritation or changes like that, it should be safe to use the oil.

Instead of using cold oil, use warm oil or at least oil at room temperature. Cold oil or applying oil in cold seasons or even on wet hair could lead to common cold and other sickness at least for few people.
