Stuffed Idly

Idly is a South Indian delicacy, a savoury rice cake, which is mainly a breakfast food item. Idly is made out of a fermented batter with Rice and Lentils as ingredients. It is very fluffy and filling and served with Coconut Chutney, Sambar or Podi (made out of fried Rice, Lentils and other ingredients). Idlys are favourite among all irrespective of south or north.
Thought of making a variety, by stuffing vegetables inside and here comes the Stuffed Idly. Vegetables like Potato, Carrot, Onion, Tomato can be used to make the filling. Fill the mashed vegetables, flavoured with any masala in between two layers of Idly Batter and cook. Serve with Chutney, Sambar or Podi (Chutney Powder). You will love it.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 no Potato (Medium Sized)
  • 1 no Onion (Medium Sized)
  • 1/2 no Carrot (About 4 inches)
  • 3 nos Green Chilli
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Coconut Oil/Sunflower Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1/4 tsp Coriander Powder
  • Water as required to boil the vegetables
  • 8 spoons Idly Batter for making 8 Idlys

Instructions
 

  • Peel and chop the potato, carrot and onion into small pieces. Cut green chilli into small pieces. Keep a vessel on medium flame and add vegetables into it. Do not add green chilli at this point. Add water to cover the vegetables. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt to it. Allow it to cook well.
  • Once cooked, drain excess water if any and mash the vegetables.
  • Keep a frying pan on medium flame and add coconut/sunflower Oil into it. Add the mashed vegetables and green chilli into the oil. Add garam masala and coriander powder and mix well. Keep it aside.
  • Take the Idly Cooker/Steamer and rub a little oil on the stands/moulds. Pour Idly Batter into each mould at half of its capacity. Add 1 tbsp of mashed vegetables on the center of the batter, making sure not to press on it too hard. Cover with Idly Batter to fill the moulds. Keep the Idly Cooker/Steamer on medium flame and insert the stand into it. Allow it to cook well.
  • Once cooked, turn off the flame and open the lid of the Cooker/Steamer. Remove the stand and allow the Idlys to cool.
  • Separate Idlys and serve with Chutney, Sambar or Podi (Chutney Powder)
