Indian Art and Craft – Cheriyal Scrolls

Cheriyal Scroll or Cheriyal Scroll Painting is peculiar to Telengana. Nakashi, an art form is practiced in the Cheriyal town of Sddipet district, Nirmal and Jagital of Telengana. This is an improvised version of Nakashi art, passed down for many generations.

Cheriyal paintings depict Indian Mythology. They are designed like film strips. The story is told similar to films and comic strips. Cheriyal Scrolls are about 45 to 50 feet and have about 50 images featured on each scroll.

The Cheriyal Scrolls have been confined only to the Cheriyal town with Cinemas and Television coming into prominence. The colours used are Red, Blue and Yellow. The painter’s imagination makes Cheriyal Scrolls unique in depicting the story line.
