50+ and Health Problems

Feeling sudden changes in your health as you cross fifty? It is quite natural that you may start having some ailments and health problems when you are past 50. You may be disturbed by pains and aches which you were not bothered before. These could turn out to be bigger problems when you enter the middle age and further. I was reading through one of the articles published by WebMD and thought it is worth sharing with you all.

The body metabolism changes – down between 10 and 15 percent by age 50. Studies show that the following could be the situation when you are above 50.

  • Heart Attack – the biggest of all, a 50 year old has a 1 in 2 chance of getting heart disease at some point
  • Stroke – when blood doesn’t get to different parts of your brain like it should have, the affected brain cells start to die and lead to a sudden Stroke
  • Aneurysm – a condition that happens when the wall of an Artery gets weak and bulges outward, leading to serious internal bleeding or Stroke
  • Gallstones – hardened chunks of bile, a fluid that helps the body get rid of waste. These get stuck on the way out of Gallbladder, causing severe pain in the upper belly or behind the belly button
  • Acute Pancreatitis – causing severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and fever, which can be life-threatening
  • Broken Bones – Bones become brittle with age especially in the old age and are more likely to break
  • Vertigo – happens when tiny crystals in the inner Ear, which help one to control balance, get moved around. As you grow older these crystals may not be held in place
  • Detached Retina – Retina in your Eye gets pulled away from the outer wall of the Eye, thus will not get sufficient Oxygen and other things it needs. As a result, you may see floating specks of flashes or light or you can even permanently lose your eyesight if not taken care of
  • Kidney Stones – hard clumps of Calcium formed in the Kidneys, more common in men than in women
  • Pneumonia – Pneumococcal Pneumonia, caused by bacteria and not a virus can be life-threatening. Older people are more likely to get it because of a weak immune system of the body
  • Spinal Stenosis – narrowing of the Spinal Channel in the backbone, usually due to Arthritis. The Nerves can be pinched or squeezed causing pain, numbness or cramps in the lower back or neck
  • Gout – sudden Swelling and Pain on the joints, usually the big Toe. It is usually caused due to build up of Uric Acid in the body and a form of Arthritis
  • Pulmonary Embolism – Blood clot gets stuck in a blood vessel in one of the Lungs

You may also develop High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Hearing Loss, Vision Problems, Cancer, Depression, Dementia and others after fifty. Keep yourselves healthy by following a healthy lifestyle and doing regular exercises and Yoga to keep fit even after fifty.
