Indian Art and Craft – Phad Painting

Phad is a style of Scroll and Folk Painting originated in Rajasthan. The stories of folk Deities Prabhuji and Devnarayan are depicted and narrated by Phad paintings.

Painting

The Phad painting is traditionally done on a long piece of cloth or canvas called Phad. Organic, vegetable colours are used for the paintings. The paintings feature a running narrative of the lives and heroic deeds of deities. The canvas or cloth normally is about 15 to 30feet long.

The priest singers carry the paintings along with them. They use this as mobile temples of the folk deities. These deities are worshipped by the Rebari community of the region.

The Phad art form was revolutionized by Shree Lal Joshi and Pradip Mukherjee approximately 40 years ago. The noted artists include Shree Lal Joshi, Nand Kishor Joshi, Pradip Mukherjee, Prakash Joshi, Ghanshyam Joshi, Shanti Lal Joshi etc.
